Breaking News

Monday round-up

This weekend’s coverage focuses on public appearances by two Justices – one now retired, and one sitting.  On Sunday, retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor discussed the Court’s health care decision and the public’s opinion of the Court on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.”  CBS News, the Huffington Post, Politico (here and here), UPI, and The Hill all have coverage.  On Friday, at the American Bar Association’s annual meeting in Chicago, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Solicitor General Donald Verrilli took part in a panel discussion on the intersection of law and opera. Coverage of the event comes from the ABA Journal, ABA Now, the Wall Street Journal Law Blog, and the Huffington Post.

Briefly:

  • At the National Law Journal, Tony Mauro reports on a recent report by Mayer Brown indicating that, in the twenty-five business-related cases that the Court heard last Term, the business side won nineteen times and only lost three.  Mayer Brown partner Lauren Goldman, who prepared the report, observed that most of the cases were decided unanimously or by a vote of eight to one, suggesting that these results cannot be attributed solely to an “ideology-driven” pro-business slant.
  • The editorial board of The New York Times urges the Court to intervene in the scheduled execution of Marvin Wilson, a Texas death row inmate with an IQ of sixty-one.
  • At UPI, Michael Kirkland looks at the arithmetic surrounding the Court’s decision to grant or deny review of the constitutional challenge to Proposition 8, California’s ban on same-sex marriage.
  • Slate’s Scott Korb reviews Reading Law, the new book by Justice Antonin Scalia and Bryan Garner.
